An advice to all Muslim brothers and sisters studying the Holy Qur’an this ramadan - do not study just the transalation of the Quran but the tafsir as well.A tafsir explains the verses of the quran with appropriate references from the ahadiths . So this way you will understand the Quran as well as the sunnah.
Most famous
Sunni:
The authentic elaborate exegesis of the Quran which every scholar learns
Tanwir al-Miqbas (~800)
Tafsir al-Tabari (~922)
Tafsir al-Kabir (1149-1209).
Tafsir al-Qurtubi (~1273)
Tafsir ibn Kathir (~1370)
Tafsir al-Jalalayn (1460–1505)
Maariful Quran (1897–1976)
Tafsirs written during modern age
Tafsir al-Baghawi
Tafsir al-Kabir
Dur al-Manthur
Tadabbur-i-Quran
Tafhim-ul-Quran
Now the important question is which tafsir should we pick.We have to keep couple of things in mind for this
1)The tafsir should be easy to understand for the common man.
2)Should be available in the language we understand and easily available in the market or online (authentic source).
3) If possible should have consensus from scholars of different schools of thought in Islam.
The tafsir I have researched(based on discussion with scholars) which meets all the criteria is tafsir Ibn Kathir.
I also advice tafim ul quran because it explains the quran in the most simplest language but sadly there is difference of opinion among scholars on this.
Why I have started studying Ibn Kathir
No seeker of knowledge can do without these two books (Tafseer Ibn Katheer and Tafseer al-Tabari). With regard to which is superior, nothing like the Tafseer of Ibn Jareer (al-Tabari) has been written since. It is essential for scholars and seekers of knowledge, but it is not appropriate for ordinary people because they are not qualified to understand it properly. The Tafseer of Ibn Katheer is more appropriate for the ordinary people, and there is much in it from which scholars and seekers of knowledge can benefit.
And Allaah knows best. *2

Why the tafsir is indispensable to acquire knowledge of islam.
Ibn Kathir wrote a famous commentary on the Qur’an named Tafsir al-Qur’an al-‘Adhim which linked certain Hadith, or sayings of Muhammad, and sayings of the sahaba to verses of the Qur’an, in explanation. Tafsir ibn Kathir is famous all over the Muslim world, and among Muslims in the Western world is one of the most widely used explanations of the Qur’an today.
Ibn Kathir was renowned for his great memory regarding the sayings of Muhammad and the entire Qur’an. Ibn Kathir is known as a qadi, a master scholar of history, also a muhaddith and a mufassir (Qur’an commentator). Ibn Kathir saw himself as a Shafi’i scholar. This is indicated by two of his books, one of which was Tabaqaat ah-Shafa’iah, or The Categories of the Followers of Imam Shafi.
Upon completion of his studies he obtained his first official appointment in 1341, when he joined an inquisitorial commission formed to determine certain questions of heresy. Thereafter he received various semi-official appointments, culminating in June/July 1366 with a professorial position at the Great Mosque of Damascus.[2]
